I recorded a new version of our ‘So What About Leadership?’ podcast with my colleague Roisin yesterday. We’ve spent a lot of time on previous episodes discussing how leaders handle the ‘now’ of the current crisis. This time we felt strongly that it was time to make it about the future. We hope it helps you to begin/continue to have inspiring conversations about creating a positive future in your own leadership context.

When leadership is happening well, there’s no doubt that we love it!
We know where we are headed. We know how to make our best contribution and what purpose or cause our efforts are going towards, and that feels good.
When leadership is good, we feel motivated by the work we’re doing because the picture of an exciting future has been clearly painted. We can see how getting there benefits us, the organisation and perhaps even society as a whole.
Of course the opposite of all the above it true when leadership is not good. And leadership is not a ‘thing’, it’s a person…or better still, multiple people, leading well.
Whatever it takes for you to lead well, really well, is absolutely worth it. The difference it makes to you and those you lead is huge.

Here are nine magic questions – if you develop crystal clear answers to all of these in any given situation, be it something for yourself, helping motivate a member of your team, or in a sales context, it will make a massive difference:
1. What do you want?
2. Why do you want it?
3. Why is that important to you?
4. Why don’t you have it now?
5. When would you like to have it? Why then?
6. How will you feel when you have it?
7. What do you need to do to get it?
8. Are you willing to do what it takes to get it?
9. What’s the Plan of Action to get it?

Nothing moves and motivates people to great action and achievement more than a compelling vision – a picture of a brighter future, a better world, a purpose worthy of their best efforts.
We all have desire for that ‘brighter future’ to include the things personal to us – personal finance, security, family and friends etc, but there also lies within each of us (sometimes deeper than others!) a sense of wanting to give, to help, to share and to contribute towards a greater good.
If we wish to see extraordinary efforts from ourselves and those we work with, then matching these two elements – a vision of a brighter future personally, as well as for others… for the world…for our neighbourhood – will likely yield incredible rewards, both in terms of productive work, as well as happy, fulfilled workers! I am continually amazed by the potential of my fellow human beings to care greatly about things which are ultimately unselfish.
A few minutes taken to begin formulating the picture of a brighter future that we dream of might just be the most important few minutes I, and perhaps you too, might spend today.
